Auto Air Conditioning
Service- Do I always use green o-rings when servicing an
R-134a auto A/C system? Does the color of
the o-ring really matter? What's the difference in colors
of o-rings for auto A/C service?
Have you heard what

The
Auto A/C Service Question was... Black
o-rings are for older A/C systems. I should only use
green o-rings for R-134a A/C systems.
Believe
it of not, the color of the o-ring has absolutely nothing to do with the
type of A/C system it should be used on. What is important is the material
that its made from. Therefore, if youre servicing auto A/C systems
and think that all replacement o-rings have to be green, youre wrong.
Although
black o-rings were the standard for older automotive A/C systems using R-12
refrigerant and green o-rings are very common in A/C systems using R-134a,
there is no rule about colors of o-rings. What really matters is the material
that the o-ring is made of and there is no correlation between the color
of the o-ring and its material. To better understand the use of different
colors and the proper materials, see the details under the correct answer
for this question.
