The
Auto A/C Service Question was... Topping
off the system is ok if the pressure gauges show
that it's not that low.
Topping
off or just adding refrigerant to an A/C should never be considered a real
fix or repair for any automotive A/C system. Above that, you really never
know how much refrigerant is in the system to start.
The
pressure gauge readings never tell you exactly how much refrigerant is in
the system. Thats because the pressure gauges are reading the
refrigerants pressure and the total system charge is always by weight
of refrigerant. There is no correlation between the pressures and the weight.
In addition to that, if adding refrigerant, you do not have the opportunity
to vacuum the system. Vacuum is an important part of A/C service because
it removes excess moisture that causes the formation of harmful acids. See
complete details under the
correct
answer for this question.
